What is the University Park/Glen Park Weed & Seed Weed & Seed is an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Justice. Each year, sites are recognized and given special designation as Weed and Seed Sites. To qualify, a community must be designated and recognized as having high levels of crime and public safety concerns. The University Park/Glen Park Weed & Seed site is embarking upon its 3rd year (2009 Program Year) of activities to support its five-year strategy. The initiative is slated to receive approximately $1 Million over five years.

What Can Glen Park Residents Do To Get Involved The aim of the initiative is to engage residents and get them involved in Weeding-out crime and negative influences in the community and Seeding-in positive influences and social support systems. You can help support the initiatives by volunteering and getting involved and participating in Weed & Seed projects and activities or sitting on one or more of the following sub-committees. Law Enforcement/Community Policing

Strategy: Actively engage law enforcement through various methods in the community to impact drug trafficking and juvenile and drug related crime. Provide closer supervision and monitoring of offenders and ex-offenders. Communicate the efforts to reduce crime to residents and demonstrate an active and on-going presence with measured outcomes to the community.

Prevention/Intervention/Treatment

Strategy: Seek assistance from charitable foundations and faith-based organizations to provide alternatives and deterrents to criminal activities for the youth and adults. Support these activities with parental involvement and education relating to; substance abuse, parenting, life skills, job training, conflict resolution, study habits, tutoring and heath care. Provide a mentor for each participant and monitor outcomes.

Neighborhood Revitalization

Strategy: The overall strategy aims to target existing programs and resources to improve the physical conditions of the community and enhance the neighborhood image. As part of this strategy concentrated efforts will focus on demolition of abandoned properties, maintain vacant land, aggressive code enforcement, home improvements, and new housing construction.

What Is the Intent of a Social Contract/Petition The University Park/Glen Park Weed & Seed Advisory Board and residents drafted the social contract/petition, with the aim of helping the Glen Park Weed and Seed area define basic goals in improving appearance, safety, education and economic opportunity in the Area. The petition will be distributed throughout the target area and shared with local officials and organizations who are interested in seeing the Weed & Seed Area progress. The intent of the contract/petition is also for the purpose of encouraging and assisting residents who pledge to work together to build a safe, economically viable and decent place in which to live and raise children.
